Every winter, thousands of UK drivers damage their cars or waste time with poor de-icing technique. And every year, drivers are fined for driving with only a small porthole cleared in their windscreen. Here is the right way to do it.
Never Use Boiling Water
This is the most important rule. Pouring boiling water on a frozen windscreen can cause the glass to crack due to thermal shock. The sudden temperature difference between the boiling water and the frozen glass creates stress that can shatter the windscreen. Even hot (not boiling) water is risky. It will also refreeze quickly, making the situation worse.
The Correct De-Icing Method
- Start the engine. Turn on the engine and set the heater to the windscreen (defrost mode), with the temperature on maximum and the fan on high. This warms the glass from the inside
- Spray de-icer. Use a commercial de-icer spray on all windows. Apply generously and give it 30 seconds to work
- Scrape with a proper scraper. Use a plastic ice scraper (never a metal tool, credit card, or CD case). Work in long strokes, pushing the loosened ice away
- Clear ALL glass. Windscreen, rear window, all side windows, and mirrors. Clear snow from the roof, bonnet, and boot lid too
- Check your lights. Clear ice and snow from all lights so they are fully visible
Overnight Prevention
You can save time in the morning by preventing ice from forming in the first place:
- Windscreen cover: A windscreen frost cover (around £5–£15) prevents ice forming overnight. Secure it under the wipers or in the doors so it does not blow away
- WD-40 on locks: If your car has physical key locks that freeze, a squirt of WD-40 in the lock mechanism before winter prevents freezing
- Silicone spray on door seals: Prevents door seals freezing shut. Apply a thin coat of silicone spray to the rubber door seals
- Park facing east: If possible, park facing the rising sun. Morning sunlight will help de-ice the windscreen naturally
The Law: You Must Clear ALL Windows
It is illegal to drive with obscured vision. Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, you must be able to see clearly through all windows. Driving with only a small porthole cleared in the windscreen can result in a £100 fine and 3 penalty points for driving without due care and attention.
You must also clear snow from your roof. If a sheet of snow slides off your roof onto your windscreen (or the car behind), it is dangerous and you can be prosecuted.
- Leaving your engine running to warm up while you go back inside is a theft risk
- Your insurance may not cover theft if the keys were in the ignition and the car was unattended
- It is also technically an offence to leave an engine idling on a public road

Defrosting Efficiently
To defrost your car as quickly as possible:
- Set the heater to maximum temperature and fan speed, directed at the windscreen
- Turn on the air conditioning (AC) — this dehumidifies the air inside the car, which clears internal condensation faster
- Open a window slightly to let humid air escape and fresh dry air in
- Use the rear window heater if your car has one
- Clear internal condensation with a clean microfibre cloth if needed
Final Thoughts
Proper de-icing takes about 5 minutes and keeps you safe and legal. Budget the extra time into your morning routine during winter. A windscreen cover is the single best investment for saving time on frosty mornings.
